There is a lone waiting shed

In the countryside along a

Stretch of a bent road.

It is made of concrete and 

Painted in calming blue

Like the expansive clear sky

During the Summer heat.

A cold breeze breaks through 

The misty air. Autumn is coming.

One by one, the green foliage

Of Maple trees queuing

The one-way road begin metamorphosing

Into sunset-and-wine hues.

I'm waiting under the lone waiting shed

By and by, watching the cars

Pass by. One of them stops and

You emerge out from it.

From the book I'm reading, I

Look up leisurely and there you

Are smiling brightly at me. 

I realize there and then that

you are more beautiful than the

Red-and-orange foliage

Surrounding the both of us.

He chucked his backpack and briefcase on the passenger seat while Tay entered the front passenger and Arm next to Off’s items.

“So… Peng… Where are you going without us?”

Off continued silently. He got into the driver’s seat and turned the ignition on. When they were out of the campus driveway, he murmured, “With Nong Gun.”

“With who?” Arm asked.

Tay whiplashed his head towards his Peng so fast, Off thought it would break. 

“Peng?!!”

“Hmm.”

“Wait... With who?” Arm repeated. “Who??? Why am I the only one clueless?”

“With Nong Gun,” Tay told Arm. He’s still stunned.

“Gun?!!!”

“Who said I’m spending it all alone?”

“Ah?!!”

“Come again?!”

Off huffed at their shocked expressions. He reached out for his keys when they got into the parking lot. 

The two got out of their frozen state and rushed toward him.

“You’re going out tonight?” Tay asked.

“You’re going with someone?” Arm whispered in disbelief.

“Don’t tell me someone’s going to come to our dorm room tonight??? Peng, no girls allowed in our building!”

Arm punched his arm. “Idiot. P’Off isn’t like you.”

“Hey!”

When they reached his car, Off clicked his car key remote and opened the back passenger.

“Peng!” Tay called out. “Are you going to come with us?”

Off looked over his shoulder. Tay and Arm sandwiched him between their sweaty bodies. They just finished P.E.

Arm shook his head. “You know, P’Off usually stays home during Friday nights. Unlike you.”

Tay tsked.

“You have to come this time! Peng,  Mild and Mook are going to be there.”

“Nah,” Off said. 

“Don’t tell me you're really going to spend Friday night all by yourself again. Come’n! Come out once in a while.”

“Hmm.”

Arm shook Tay. “He said he didn’t want to. Why are you bothering him again?”

You experience crawling, getting up 

Then falling

Repeatedly, Cassandra

It’s been twenty-three years since you 

Took your first step, Cassandra

Life dealt you lightning and thunders 

Heavy pours and dark clouds 

Rainbows and sunshines, Cassandra 

How was your life, Cassandra?

You walked through a dark, suffocating 

Tunnel, so long, it seemed it’ll never 

End.

It seized you, choked you, yet you 

Continued to trudge, Cassandra. 

When did you become so... strong, 

Cassandra?

You reached out your hand

While you were submerged on a

Cold, pitch-black pond.

Did anyone grasp it, Cassandra?

There was a crack on your voice

In the middle of a recital

Blank, judgmental eyes boring

Into you.

Did someone comfort you, Cassandra? 

When you attempted to jump, Cassandra, 

Was there anyone below willing to

Catch you?

Off hesitated. Maybe he was moving too fast and needed to step on the brake. 

“To get to know each other.”

“As a friend.” For now. He hurriedly clarified. 

“Of course I’ll be happy, P’!” Gun replied. “I go to clubs and bars on Fridays with my friends.”

Clubs? Bars? 

“Nong, do you like to party?”

“I like parties and dancing, P’.”

Off preferred to spend his Friday nights sleeping in. As a graduate student, he had more time to himself, but academically, it was hard. In addition, he also worked full-time. 

He wanted to rest on Fridays.

“Sure! Where?”

Off reached out for a glass of water. Nervous.

“You seemed fun, P’, I wanted to be your friend, too.” There was a shy emoji with the message.

He laughed softly. 

“You’re already friends with Tay. Don’t you find it annoying how loud we were?”

“No, P’!” he sent a horrified emoticon. “I really found you and P’Tay funny.”

“I’m kidding,” he replied. 

Before he could lose the steam, and his nerves, he sent another message.

“What do you do for fun? Do you want to go out with me?”

A radio silence from the other side.

“Go out, P’?”

Off accepted the Follow request. Followed back. Then replied a modest “Hello :).”

He waited anxiously while castigating himself for not following back or scrolling Gun’s account when he received the request. 

“Hello, P’!” his phone pinged. “You probably don’t remember me, but I saw you during P’Tay’s poolside party last month.”

He did?

Off tried to remember if he met the cutie before. He couldn’t.

He replied, “You did?”

“I asked P’Tay to introduce us. He was so busy with his guests; he never did.”

 Off could only exclaim “oh!” because of a lost chance. He cursed Tay. 

“Introduce… Why?”

“I know him” was Tay’s reply later that night. Off only sent a Like.

He never bothered with the request, so when he saw the message from the other person, he got curious.

Off opened their profile. Scrolled. Pictures of beaches, sunsets, and tropical beauty were the account owner’s subjects. 

Some food and the cute, white, and fluffy Maltese puppy. 

Until a picture caught his eyes. 

Gun Atthaphan, the account’s owner, in a bathtub filled with bubbles. 

Smiling cutely at the camera.

Off’s heart beat. Then drumrolled. 

If Off could name the emotion he felt at that moment…

It’s LOVE.

The past. 

Off was scrolling his Instagram feed when he got a notification. A follow request from a mutual friend he had with Tay.

As a private person, he had his account in private. On the other hand, the requester was very public.

He had five-digit followers. A feat like that would mean that he’s a very popular guy.  

But he’s Tay’s friend. Maybe.

He sent a quick message to Tay.

No answer.

Deeming this as not urgent, Off decided to ignore the request.

He forgot about it until two days later.

The requester sent him a direct message.

“Hello!”

Chapter 1

Off heaved. Gun tread passed him. No eye contact. No smile.

No “Papii!” while running towards Off with full vigor.

Instead of following him, Off stayed where he sat - on their loveseat bought two years ago when they moved in their condo unit together.

Off thought, it was only a matter of time before it would become only his. 

Because Gun was leaving. Is leaving him. 

He stood up when the door to the guest room - where Gun slept these past four months - opened and Gun, suitcase in tow, stepped out.

“Gun - “ 

“No, P’Off. Let me go. Please.”

He left.
