Poem | Princess Not

By Eddlynn Jennifer Mangaoang

Back when I was young
I believed in true love
Fairytales were my stories
I was the princess
You were the prince
And like Sleeping Beauty
I woke up from a
Hundred years of sleep
Only to realize that
there's no prince to wake me.

Several years later,
I got bored in my tower.
Unlike Rapunzel, I didn't wait
For my prince
I threw my hair over the edge
And chased my own freedom
My own happiness
Oh, Mama Gothel, it's okay not
To forgive me. Please don't ask for
My forgiveness as well.

I heard the prince's car
Vroom into my driveway
He said, "Cinderella, come here
Put your feet on these glass shoes."
I thought about it and then
Replied, "Nah, it's too bothersome
And might cut my feet instead."
Prince Charming, I'll rather be in
Comfortable rubber shoes when
Walking about. Hope you understand.

Back when I was young
I thought I was the princess
And you were the prince
But then I realized
I could live without a man
I realized I am no Cinderella,
Rapunzel, nor Sleeping Beauty
I realized that there's only
The old, little me. And
I can take care of myself just fine.

Poem | Cherry Wine

Don't tell me not to wait for you
I've been longing so much
For your touch, your care
Your love.

We walk this busy road together
For three hundred years.
Each lifetime as sweet and
Tumultuous as the last.

I gaze from afar to see you
Coming with your bamboo pole
And a straw hat. In your hands
Are the famous cherry wines.

Beside me, you sit and muddle
Our small talks turn into serious
Chatter. The sun gradually climbs down
And bid its farewell beyond the mountain.

You and I share lore and
Drink wine. Merry for at
Long last, after a thousand miles,
We've find each other again.

Poem | Rainy Days

The sun's light reflects on the moon's stony
    Surface.
Cicadas' chirps echo along the empty pavement
    Sidewalk.
Sprinkles of rain water the ground
    And
The Earth's musty scent permeates the atmosphere.

I see a green frog. It leaps from the huge
    Taro leaf
Onto the big, shallow pond where colorful
    Koi fishes
The size of an arm swim. A row of
    Cattails
Dancing with the wind.

It's a moody September morning.

Poem | Pinwheels

The red, blue, and green
Pinwheels turn and turn
With the whisper of the
Cool autumn wind.
Xiao Mao, from up above her
Perch, gazes outside and sees
Two little robins dancing on
The ginkgo's tree branch.
Xiao Mao stands and stretches
Her listless body. After a huge
Yawn, she jumps the steps and
Walks two steps forward then
Another step back.
She does this for some time
Until the door opens. She runs
Outside, ignoring the person's call
And finds herself atop the
Tree sunbathing.
Xiao Mao is satisfied.

*No little robins are harmed with this poem.

Poem | Leaves

I found myself crying
At the ridiculousness of
this empty life... Or
Was it me who was empty
Thus I did not appreciate
This life given to me?

If so, my apologies.
Like a single pine tree
Among birches, I found
Myself losing colors and
Leaves. Perhaps no chance
Will knock on my trunk
And I will remain a
Blacken dead tree.
